DESCRIPTION:
APW - Waltham, Appleton, Tracy & Co with vibrating hairspring stud, 15J, Model 1860, Civil War era, 16S, heavy 18K gold original HC with elegant black enamel inlay to front and rear, case with marking for retailer Browne & Spaulding, gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#140171. Gross weight of assembled watch 75.3 dwt (117.1 g). The vibrating hairspring stud of this example is a scarce and notable feature that was intended to improve isochronal properties of the hairspring, and this feature is only found among a small fraction of the "American Watch Co." and "Appleton, Tracy & Co." grade production in Models 1860 and 1862. This movement is from a production run listed in factory records as having been completed between September, 1864 and February, 1865. The retail partnership of Browne & Spaulding was active in New York City between approximately 1865 and 1869. From the collection of Ethan Lipsig.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some yellowing and haze of gilt tone, some scattered micro-fine scratches and mild small surface spots; dial with small nicks around rim of seconds-register hole, otherwise virtually flawless; excellent hour hand and seconds-hand, fair minute hand with punch marks to its center hub and with oxide to spade and tip; case ample wear, ding toward lower-right of front, mild soft ding left of front center, mild small ding toward upper portion of rear, engine turning detail largely lost from front with only a minority remaining lightly visible, rear engine turning nearly fully lost throughout with only small portion at perimeter edge remaining visible and some very faint traces remaining near center, black enameling nearly fully intact with few small nicks; tight small sized replacement bow is thinned at upper-left, push shows ample wear; good glass crystal.
